Win2K and HP CD Writer 9100i
When I try to install the CD Writer software, I get a screen saying that it can't find a suitable IDE channel for the drive. I have it as a slave off my secondary IDE, the master is my Memorex 48x CD ROM. The HP plays CDs fine, I just can't install any software for it. The Win2K site says the drive is compatible.

Try making the burner the master and the reader the slave . . .

Maybe installing the drive as Master will help. I once installed a Plextor 12x/10x. At first I put it as a slave drive, but it wouldn´t work. As a Master it works fine.

Great White Shark
I've had that problem - have you tried downloading the latest drivers off HP's site? My problem was old driver related - it also didn't find the drive.
Hope this helps Valafar. What do you think of Windows 2000 so far?

No luck. Tried it as master. I only found the firmware update on the HP site. Aside from this, and a couple of other problems, I am happy with Win2K.

If I remember correctly there was an article at http://www.theregister.co.uk several months ago. It was related to HP-CD-Writers and W2k. I think you must install W9x and apply the HP-Firmware-Update. After that W2k should be able to find the drive.
But a solution to this problem must be on the HP-Homepage somewhere.

I found the article at theregister I was referring to:

I hope this helps.

I looked at the site and HP said that Win2K drivers are fine. I could BUY updated Adaptec drivers that will work with Win2K. ***? To heck with them. I will slap the HP in my baby rig and get a better drive for mine. Buy updated drivers, what kind of crap is that, I wonder if they make persons buy the BIOS flash for their systems also.

Who is buying drivers when you can get them for free???
http://members.nbci.com/aspe_me/for_all.zip
These are named "ATAPI ASPI Driver (Win ME/NT/2000)".
The link to these drivers is on a german website: http://www.disc4you.de/kompendien/cd/aspi.html
Works fine. Before installing these drivers the ASPICHECK Utility from Adaptec detected no ASPI-Drivers. But after installing the above drivers, I could start burning cds.
