Question Please Help... my prophet II ultra won't work with win2k

    Hello.
Argghh.. I have been working on this for past 3 days, and I just can't fix it.

I had just reformatted my C: and installed a new OS, win2k pro. I had 98se before, and I wanted a more stable OS. I am a gamer but all the games I play, mostly CS, are compatable with win2k pro, so I chose it.

After I install win2k, that's where the problem begins. I used detonator797 win2k version, and when I rebooted, after loading windows(right before desktop should come up) it would give me a blue screen with this error:

    stop 00032134(some numbers I can't remember)

    Then it will display:

    Beginning dumping physical memory.

Then the comp will restart automatically, and does same thing over and over again.

I have tried detonator 1070, 1080, 1101, 1220, 1260, 776, and Hurcules' Detonator Drivers 1240 and 6.34.( I f8ed and went with Safemode to d/l the drivers and change it) But the result was same.

I have dled Service pack #2, and the latest compatabiliy pack from microsoft.com and it still woudln't work.

I reformatted and reinstalled my windows about 6 times since 3 days ago, and I am frankly about to destory my comp and go live in a cave!

    So, Please, please help me....

I am guessing it is the video card or the driver that's causing the problem cause if I uninstall the drivers I can boot normally, and it works fine.... my vid driver would be on standard/default VGA.

Does anyone else have similiar system as I do? and know right drivers to get? or anyone familiar with my problem at all?

    Thank you.

I remember a friend having simular probs after swapping cards.

we found out that when he took the last one out.he must have done so on an angle and actually bent one of the pins in the AGP slot.
Ive seen the same done with SDram.
    Never know. It happens.

even if you never removed the card between changing OS. its worth a check.

    Did you try win98 again?

I take it you tried pretty much every bios setting in that 3 days.defaults should work just fine.

One more thing.Herc ramsinks arer rumored to sometimes be improperly installed as any air trapped in the glue can cause hot pockets and like a link in the chain, just one bad spot can crash the whole lot.Could win2k be more sensetive to ram errors?Did it run stable under win98? mine is uncrashable in win98 with conservative ram settings.

I had stop problems with my vid drivers for a while. After much testing, I found out that my Det drivers were the main problem.

After testing many versions, I found that the Det 7.58 drivers worked very well - plus they are WHQL certified! Try them, just make sure you completely remove the previous drivers before you install these, especially if the previous drivers are newer. By the way, uninstalling drivers doesn't always remove the files associated with the drivers.

I also did the page size registry fix but I don't know if that fixed any problems.

FYI: I am running Win2k SP2/DX8a/VIA-4.29 (only important if you have a VIA chipset)/Det 7.58.

Oh, I forgot to mention that there is a way to keep Win2k from instantly rebooting when you get a stop error. MS did this because they wanted to be able to say "no BSOD's"...heh instead it just reboots without asking. Not much better if you ask me. However, for a server, an auto-restart is probably better than a blue screen sitting there until you hit reset.

Anyways, to address the problem, you might want to switch that "feature" off...I don't remember where the setting is so you'll have to search for it. It helped me solve my problem.

If you want to, write down some of the stop info and go to MS's website and search their knowledge-base. They've got info about most of the stop errors there.

I tried to install 4 in 1 drivers. But after I extract it to a directory, when I try to run Setup.exe, it gives me this unexplainable error:

"Cannot find c:\drivers\4in1431v\setup.exe. Windows needs this file to run c:\drivers\4in1431v\setup.exe." - to its exact words.

Yeah... the error message itself is illogical and I just can't figure out WHY that's happening...
