Max payne is a Direct X game (I don't even think it supports OpenGL).
Since you didn't state what games didn't work right, it is very difficult to say what the problem is. If you can, try running your desktop at the same resolution and color depth of the game. You could also try setting the game to run at a different resolution/color depth.
If you have both OpenGL and DirectX games screwing up, then I'd bet that its a driver issue. However, since you didn't say what OS you have, its again hard to diagnose the problem.

I does sound to me like a driver problem.
I would probably try to clean out my driver database completely by changing the displaytype to standard VGA first, reboot, then uninstall Nvidia drivers while they are not in use.i also then use det destroyer, reboot then reistall new drivers.
Ive also seen a strange fix that seemed to work for others.
Aparently if you go to DX Diag, disable either direct draw or direct 3D support(cant remember which) and re'enable it, it may fix it.

Agreed with this guy , use Detonator Destroyer and completely get rid of drivers and if you hawe GF2 MX the best drivers you can hawe for the 98SE are the 7.97's , 12.90's or 22.40.
After this Install DX8.1 one more time.
You can find detonator Destroyer + those drivers HERE
Take care , Bye
