Annoying humming

I got a very cheap 2 speaker + subwoffer setup from CompUSA (which is also the Manufacturer). Sometimes, it just starts buzzing for no reason. If i move the subwoffer, it stops. Ive tried unplugging and replugging the satelite speakers into the subwoffer, but the problem remains. HELP.

Since you say it was very cheap, and moving the sub fixes the problem (at least for a while), then you might have an open or loose joint somewhere on the sub. Look around the box to see if you can see anything that doesn't look quite right...if you do, a little silicone caulk should seal it right up.

Mightent it be interferance with another object? Subs aren't supposed to be anywhere near monitors and other magnetically charged objects. Also make sure you have all the sound cords tightly plugged in because that also can be a problem,

Yeah, but that is mostly the monitor / magnetically charged objects problem, hehe. Puts on a hell of a nice light show by a tv.

Thnx for ur help - my SW is on the floor, a good distance from my monitor. I don't want to bother opening it up. I guess i'll just live with it for a while thill i get the $$$ to get a decent 5 speaker system.

Poor Electrical grounding...

1. TRy pluging your computer into another wall socket & circut.
2. Try another power supply adapter to the speakers..
3. Try to ground your case better...

My subwoofer used to make noises..And it is built to be next to the monitor. It is shielded for this alone..But some are made to be on the floor. My noise stopped after I got a new power supply adapter at my old house. But now that I'm in a new place the old one works fine. So I sold the old one to a friend and it works fine for him. I'm not stupid..I was not going to keep the bad one..hehe

i have the pcworks 4pt surround sound system and mine do this too when a spike is sent like when the fridge turns on. anyway i also get radio pickup on all my cabling anyone know of any speakers that come with shielded wiring?

A number of things can cause this, most common is when somebody is using a cell phone within about 20 ft distance from the speaker..also you may have a bad wire connecting your sub to the pc, as for speakers you can get a very nice 5 piece set from altec Lansing the acs54 I think it is for about 65 bucks right now so you dont have to really spend a lot of money for good speakers.

As a former employee of compusa, where I worked in the multimedia department, you should know that you should never...EVER...buy compusa speakers. They are the lowest quality, poorest designs I have ever come across. I always recommended a higher quality 2-way like Altec or Philips, before I would even mention any compusa speakers. It just wasn't ethical for me to recommend those speakers. In the future, just bite the bullet and spend the extra $20 to get the $50 Altec Lanseng or Cambridge.

ah I see i got double posted...
it seems to be a grounding issue as was previously mentioned. First, check the cable, preferably replace the cable between the sound card and the sub. Are both the satellite and the sub humming? If only satellite is humming, then you got a bad amp in the sub. This is not uncommon.

The extra 20 bux would be paying twice as much. Still, i do wish i had gotten a better set. Oh well, i guess ill make a better choice next time. Also, is it just me, or are MOST CompUSA employes REALLY REALLY Stupid? I also bought a monitor there, and the salesperson was SOOO stupid. I asked him the differance between 2 17 inch monitors, and all he could answer was what was written on the small, brief label underneath it.

I think some of them really are that stupid, but from my experiences, I'm more inclined to believe that 90% of them are just amazingly lazy.

you're both right i'm afraid. Laziness, especially at the end of the shift (usually around 1, 5, and closing), and then most of the people on the floor don't know a damn thing about what they're responsible to know, they're just there to keep the shelves stocked and straight, and don't even try to go to managers, they're there to ***** at employees about a dead-end job and impotence. Anyway, about speakers...yeah...don't buy compusa...and eat more fish.
