Yeah,
http://www.ping.be/satcp/info01.html#EAC Go here to learn how to use this stuff below.
http://www.exactaudiocopy.de Go here to get the ripper.
http://www.chat.ru/~dkutsanov/lame387nic.zip This ZIP has the LAME executable that you want, the first site has a link to different older versions. Use the executable not the DLL. This is much faster at encoding than the DLL.
http://www.sulaco.org This is the LAME home page.
I recommend using these command line options in EAC during the encoder setup. "-b192 -k -h -ms" That gives the best quality settings, and 192kbps.
In about a week check out http://www.forsakennet.com for my site on this.

AudioCatalyst will let you go up to 320, if I remember correctly.

Master of the obvious
Are you gojng to try using your existing 96kbit/sec MP3's and re-encoding them to something higher?
If so, it will sound no better..probably worse..

NullPointerException
He's talking about resampling a 96kbs .mp3 file to a 128kbs .mp3 file - it which case you'll get aliasing, and it will sound worse. However, if encoding from a .wav file, obviously a 128kbs .mp3 will sound better than a 96kbs .mp3.
As for the main thread, I use GoldWave to encode and edit mp3 files. It needs a separate .dll to encode, but it's quite efficient and it's shareware.

If you're out for good quality then don't even consider using mp3. Use mp+ instead, it's the best format out there and it's free too. While a mp3 will have artefacts even at 320kbits/s mp+ is almost transparent to the cd at most tracks and will mostly average about 120-140 kbit/s .
