    Post Limiting bandwith

While i dont have it yet, if i were to network mine and my moms PC, how would i go about making sure that my computer got most of the bandwith. Not that i want to rob her of any, but she barely uses hers, but it's always on. I am constantly DL ing, so i want to make sure that i get most of the bandwith. How could i do this?

First off, in general if a computer is just sitting idle it isn't consuming any measurable amounts of bandwidth. Second what kind of bandwidth do you have, meaning modem, dsl, cable, etc. Either way unless your running NT4 or 2000 and or some pretty nice proxy software you might as well forget about trying to control a particular computers bandwidth, especially if you would be using a dsl/cable modem as a hub.

If you have cable it won't really matter, as everyone on your node will be sharing your bandwidth, and one more person, you mom really won't make that much of a difference.

Okay, if you are going to have a cable modem first you'll find that only 1 computer will have a usable IP at once. So you need to address this problem with a software or hardware solution. If you can con her into getting a router (100-150 depending) that would be a good way to go. I have found that bandwidth used on each computer doesn't affect the other. It appears to me that my cable modem provider (AT&T) will allow many different pipe lines using around 60-80k a sec. The answer to your original question of getting most of the bandwidth, I'd say there isn't really a way to do it.

I have DSL and cable, on the same machine, different ISP's. Got Win2k running routing and I have the load balanced that all upstream data from the server for the server apps goes out the DSL, so FTP, web etc.

I have my local network routed with both ISP's, so you can come in either way.

Its complicated and a pain in the ***. Don't try it. This is only an expirament since I have a 1 year contract with the DSL provider and got selected for testing the cable modems. As soon as the DSL contract is up, I plan to cancel it, as the cable is faster, and I rarely use the FTP server or anything. Although I may start using it more, so I may just hang on the DSL too.
