Master of the obvious
Most of them these days will play just about everything well.. Just stay away from the cheapest players and you'll be ok.. I use an AIWA MP3 unit and it has played everything (about 100+ popular movies) except a scratched (heavily) U571 DVD.
BTW the APEX unit are ok for playing just about everything - just not so pretty..

I simply love the Daewoo 3000N. Costs a hundred bucks, plays everything under the sun. VCD, xVCD, SVCD, MP3 on cd, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM(maybe), all-regions of DVD. Every little bell and whistle. Tone/pitch adjustment, s-video, 4x real-time zoom, still-frame, etc etc etc.
Simply the best DVD player I've ever seen/owned, except for one tiny little flaw. There's no power button on the remote. The power is actually a button-type switch on the unit. The big red button on the remote that one would expect to be power is actually MUTE! Aghh! So annoying. Still, for a hundred bucks, I shouldn't complain that I got a top-of-the-line DVD player

$250 is plenty for almost any unit nowadays, as long as you're not looking for true progressive scan or multidisc. Pioneer & JVC make very good units & will play CD-Rs (VCD & SVCD) without a problem.
