You don't need Norton to keep your PC "tidy". See "Norton screw my PC up utilities" is good for well.....morons! What I don't understand why put a utility on your PC to prevent problems when the utility itself causes so many? If you don't believe check their site and look at ALL the know issues the programs cause. I used Norton back in the Windows 3.1 days but not anymore. Want to keep your system tidy.

    1. scandisk(thorough)once a month.
    2. Defrag about every 2 weeks.
    3. Delete ALL the crap out of you temp folder. (At a DOS prompt type: "set" to find out)
    4. Use regclean once a month. It can be found a microsoft's website.

That's basically all you need to do.

Actually, parts of Norton are extremely valuable to have installed. Just stay away from the "Standard" Install option that installs too much crap.

Do not install Norton System Doctor or the Crash protector utility (forget its name). Both of these programs cause more problems running in the background constantly than they solve.

However, Disk Doctor is better than scandisk (which is just a stripped down version). WinDoctor can find some obtuse problems. Norton Recycle Bin and Unerase Wizard have saved my butt more than once. And Speed Disk is about 1000 times better than Defrag.

Other programs like Space Wizard and Registry Tracker may be useful for some, but I don't use these. Use "Custom Install" to pick and choose what to install.

Open Source is free like a puppy is free.

Yes, *some* parts of norton are usefull...but dont let disk doctor try and fix your partition table! Its screwed my computer up 2 times. Speed disk is cool, and win doctor is usefull also, but dont install crashguard!

I quite like NU2K, the windoctor is good the diskdoctor is ok but, it can sometimes take 2 or 3 attemps to fix a prob 'cause it keeps restarting it's self, but avoid at all cost the things that run in the background.

I second that! Although Partition Magic is a nice program.

All of these people with SystemWorks problems. Man, the only thing I ever install from SystemWorks is Norton Utilities, stictly because I like the defrag program. Other than that, I leave it out..

I didn't realize there was any other option! FDISK rocks! Of course I still refer to it as F**KDISK...heh!

As far as Norton products go, they will never find a place on any system of mine, any system I build, or any friends system that they expect me to help them with. I won't even allow it at my company. I'd certainly never use their anti-virus software. McAfee is better. But then again, I don't run anti-virus software and my machines are stable and virus free. Worst case scenario, if I catch a virus I'll nuke the box and reinstall the OS. I do it several times a year anyway since nothing beats a "fresh" OS.

That's just my .02 pesos worth.

Nortan Utilities as a whole is a computer killer. I've worked in tech support for a while now and I've heard hundreds of horror stories about using nortan utilites and it's defualt install. It just ruins windows. Crash gaurd is the worst windows mangler around, don't even install it. but the antivirus program is probably the best antivirus program there is. So just install what you think you'll use and don't install anything that says it runs in the background like crashguard. These automatic type programs have a tendancy to automaticly mess things up. Best of luck.

Norton quicker defrag and scan disc clone cuts corners, I've lost all my info on my D drive before now, I can't believe I brought that rubbish. I don't install anything of Norton Utils. The only thing norton have done right is Norton Anti-Virus, that's the only thing I use, saved me a few times from nasties in my inbox etc.

The only people who have troubles with it, are the ones who don't know what thier doing. Like with DiskDoctor screwing stuff up, don't let it automatically fix stuff.

I should say I let PartitionMagic and BootMagic touch my partition table. I also let Win2k Disk Manager touch it.

Why the heck did my mom have to spill Pine-Sol and let it soak into the carpet. It smells really bad in here.
