We need more programmers here
We definitely need to get more programmers in here . Poor folks like jester are asking hard and direct programming questions, and I doubt there's a soul in here that has an answer for him. I hate to see that...
Well the registered members count grows daily here at Sharky forums, hopefully as more people find this wonderful place, some of them will have some great programming background too. It's alot to ask from a hardware driven site I know.

Yeah. I'm a Comp. Sci. Major myself, and I can't answer most of these questions, but I'm sure that I will be able to eventually.

Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

Heh...I was a comp sci major for a semester. Then a history major for almost 2 years, and now Im a Web Site Development major...so I kinda wished I had stayed a Comp Sci major since the begining...woulda been easier! Oh well, live and learn.

I was afraid of asking that question, due to the lack of ASP programmers here. But what the hell, thought I'd throw it out. I'm currently working on the solution, which will use a couple different concepts. It just seems like such a easy thing to do that there should be a easy way to do it. Guess thats not the case.

They actually have a major for a Web Site Developer? What college are you attending?
What kind of classes are they offering and which ones are you taking? Sounds very interesting. I'm currently a Computer Science Major and taken all of my required classes, but now focusing on Web Development(atleast Client/Server). Classes such as ASP/Database and Enterprise Java. I'm also taking a class for Data Communications. Are these anything familiar to what you are taking?

Well, i think there are lot of programmers in here, it's just that not everybody is going to know every language. I know quite a few myself and I am only able to provide suggestions to a few questions.

Not only that, I'm sure they don't feel like examining my code. Plus my speling and gramma is bit horrible.

I'm attending Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI. World reknown for it's Culinary department, lol, but it actually has a technology department as well. I transfered here because it was the only place within 3 hours of my local area that offered such a major. It's pretty rare still.
Class...well mine are a little bit adjusted, because i declared a "concentration" in programming, which means i get to take all the programming courses too.
Here's most of the tech courses I take:
-Sys Anyalysis & Design
-Topics in Computers
-Computer Business Applications
-Intro to Data Communications
-Intro to Programming (C)
-Data Structures (More C)
-Advanced Programming (even more C)
-Object Oriented Programming
-Assembly
-Web Design Concepts
-Advanced Web Design
-Database Marketing (more on e-commerce side than tech)
-Electronic Commerce
And there's some other, management, and marketing courses mixed in.
I personally wouldn't recommend this school too highly. I find the classes far too easy. The only reason I stay here is because Im reluctant to transfer colleges yet again, because that would mean delaying graduation yet again, which could mean I'd be looking at a total of 6 years of college for a BA....which is BS! hehe. So I'm sitting tight, and getting my degree. Plus here in Providence I got a nice part time web development job with Andera.com
That's where I learn the most really, with the 'real' experience.

I've basically taken all of those courses except for the management side and the last three courses. I've also taken some GUI(Visual C++, Java) and a database class(two actually). Are your web development classes geared towards unix or windows? Personally, I find it a shame that most colleges(atleast the ones I know) only teach the windows aspect of web development. When you and I both know that there is a whole other world out there besides windows. Its not like CGI's havn't been around for a short time. Heck, about 80% of our servers at my college are linux!

Yeah this school has nothing to do with Linux. It's all windows based, which the head of the CS department can't stand. If I want to learn the ins & outs of Linux I gotta do it on my own time, which is alright I guess.
And what did you mean by CGI? CGI runs on Windows servers too! But yeah, Apache/Linux servers are at least 50% of the market, hard to say. Definitely a good thing to know.

Sorry for the confusion. I havn't really programmed in CGI, so I didn't know that it's available in windows fashion. Guess my Client/Server professor forgot to mention that, or any other dynamic language that creates html. I think i've learned more from perusing web sites than from that class. Atleast I've had the privilege of learning about some languages not affiliated with the "Dark Side". May the penguin be with you.

Ah that's cool. Yeah if this is Perl based CGI we're talking about, than it depends on the functions called within the CGI script that determine if it can be run on an NT server as well. Most scripts run on both, and the "path to Perl" isn't needed on an NT kernal.

That will definately help us CS majors, I know I often lurk anywhere on the web when I need a little help on one of my C++ projects. This is really my first programming experience and I'm starting with C++ I have heard this isn't the easiast language to start with, but so far it hasn't been to bad. 3 and a half years to go.
