Exclamation Looking for some help on this issue -CGI,Perl,SSI,PHP-

well, i'd like to be able to make my site automated.. Looking to make templates so that i can select banners for advertisers, and then just be able to update the template where the banner is located and what links it has, and whether there is more than one banner or not.

Also, for updating the index page, i'd like there to be a template. Then, for the rest of the pages, i'd like there to be a standard template for submitting news, and one for editorials.. then when each is submitted, they will be added to the database and update the entire site, including the index template.

Also would need a way for people to log in so that they can get to the templates online and submit their news/editorials *only* if they have permissions to do so. dont want outside sources submitting news :P

I dont know much about programming (basic, fortran, pascal, vb, java), but what i do know tells me that its going to require either SSI, or php. I'm also wondering how hard this would be to setup, and if there's any online sources that provide the info required to learn this, or free source code.

Being a poor college student, i cant really afford to hire an elite programming god, but after having to hand code over 200 website pages, its really kinda important that i make it more automated.

    Thanks,
    CaTaLyST

Yeah I'd definitely look into doing this with either MySQL/PHP, or MS-SQL/Cold Fusion. I'd love to help you out myself, but unfortunately my free-time lately is really limited.

I've done loads of work like this for other websites out there, it's basically my job. But for starters, you need to find out where you're getting this website hosted. Are you hosting it yourself, or using a co-location service? That's always optimal if you ask me, but if you're going to go throuh a shared hosting service, you're going to have to be wise on who you pick. Also....shared hosting services that offer database support is usually rather pricey.

That MySQL is where it's at. So is all you're looking for is for someone to make you a web-based PHP "administration" tool for your website? Allowing you to do things like add articles, etc etc? Those can take alot of work, depending on what exactly it is that you want done. If you can shoot me an e-mail sometime with a list of requirements, and some links perhaps showing me what the site currently looks like...and needs to do for you, I'd be happy to set you in the right direction, and if my schedule permits...do some PHP work for you.
