Smile What screen resolution do you design web sites at?

62% of my site traffic use 800 x 600 pixels.

I always make my pages with tables using a set width and a % to fill up the screen for anyone using more than 800 x 600 a set width of 770 fits perfect at 800x600 on my computer.

I used to make the hole site using % but for anyone using a resolution less than 800x600 all the site's content would end up crushed together and look like crap AOL's web browser is only 640x480 I used to try to make sites to fit that but that's hardly any room.

So is it safe to always use a set width of 770 and % in tables? That way your content stays where you want it when someone is using a low resolution and it fills up the screen with they are using a large one?

The downside to setting pixel widths for your table is that it doesn't scale at all.

I always run my monitor at 2048x1536, regardless of what I am developing, but, I make my browser the size that it would be at 1024x768 to test my pages (for a best guess at what it may look like for the reader).

The best web designers I know seem to design their pages so they scale well to basically any size of screen (there are exception cases where you must force a size (like a header), but percentages are always best).

I target 800x600 as a minimum, make sure it works good and is readable at that resolution, then just make sure it still looks good at larger resolutions up to 1280x1024. If you do a lot of web work, I suggest a second monitor. Its real nice to have a second 17" monitor sitting by mine that is at 800x600, then I can just open my project up over there and see how it looks. Its also nice to have my photoshop tools on the second monitor, then I can use the entire 21" monitor for the image I am working on.

I have noticed that XP set my default resolution on this computer to 1024x768 (on a GF3)...so I thought "OK, it's the gfx card"...

Then I installed it on a celeron with the old intel integrated video, it *STILL* set default resolution to 1024x768.

As more and more computers get sold with 17" monitors, I come to see 8x6 starting to go away!

It seems just like yesterday when 60 FPS in UT would be considered AWESOME and high *** resolutions like 2000+ was unheard of!

I try to make most sites fit into 800px width, but some clients may specifically request other sizes, usually 1000px to fit the majority of their readers' resolution.

It also depends on the content of the site, so if there is lots, I definitely won't go below 800, and often if there is hardly any I put the main content in the first 600x400px.
