Officially getting laid off today.
Welp, today is the day. 2 weeks in the works, and this is my last day on the job. Listen to this crap though...
1 1/2 weeks ago, they tell our division we're all being laid off this friday. We'll get 2 weeks severance and accrued vacation.
Time passes, its the big lay-off day. And word gets passed down, that now they're taking away our severance, and we get nada! Bastards... they're cheap as hell, so I'm not surprised really... but still... they straight-up lied to us.
Ahh well, its a crappy company to work for anyways.

That sux. We just had some layoffs, but everyone left with four weeks severance. Of course, they were out of the building three minutes after the layoffs were announced...

The plant I worked at is dumping 253 ppl in the next 6 months, 237 hourly 16 salaried. No word yet on who's losing their job though. We only know that many positions are being cut.

That's just downright mean of them! I went though getting laid off last year and know how it feels (well sorta, got 2 weeks severance). It's a very tough job market these days, so don't wait before prepping your resume and getting it out there right away. As long as you're persistant with the job searching something will come up as there are still jobs out there, just you're competing with many others that are out of work also.

Motivating yourself can be hard, but in order to get a new job you just have to be very persistant. Good luck to you! Assume you're in programming of some sort, since you made your post here?

Yeah I am a web developer. Well I spoke to the HR department and told them what I had been told about severance and they gave me 1 weeks worth. So its better than nothing I guess. Now I gotta start the hunt again.
Thanks for the support.

Depending on what area of web development you're in you should be fine. There are plenty of jobs for back-end work (especially JavaServlet, JSP, ASP), not as much on the front-end though.
I recommend www.dice.com as a source for job ads, it was the only place that I actually got calls back after submitting my resume - hotjobs and monster were hardly worthwhile for me.

Tell me about it... I've been fairly active about sending resume's since early January and I've only received one response, and that was an automated e-mail response.... *sigh*
I've been out of work since Nov. 30. That Friday (the 30th) I learned a little after 12p that my exit interview was at 1p. Thankfully, I had accrewed 6 weeks of severance (3.9 years there) with what vacation I hadn't taken.
My biggiest problem is my lack of programming skill and experience. I'm not an incredible programmer, and while I was a Co-Op, I didn't get many programming assignments to expand my programming skills.

I was a Co-op for 3.5 years. I was then hired full time Software Engineer from July to Nov. *sigh*

Ugh that sucks. What kind of experience do you have?
It seems like theres more web job postings out there than there was last april when I was hunting last. But if you've been out since November that doesn't make me feel too good.

Sounds like you have a chance. I was laid off from a good programming job in September of 1990 and unlike the one who said (s)he had little experience, I had too much experience. Being one who had specialized in communications software associated with one of the second tier main frame manufacturers and over 50 at the time, I was considered to be too specialized for those who were hiring. This in spite of the fact that I had a demonstatable record of learning different machines and different programming languages. They did not want to pay the bucks I had been getting and did not feal that I would stick around for less. Younger folks have it a bit easier. Keep your chin up!

I was laid off in Nov as well, after 3 years with a F500 company. When it comes down to it, there is no such thing as job security.
If you are out of work and you have gone through your notice pay and severance pay, then file for unemployment. At least then you'll have more time to find full-time work, and still be able to pay the bills somewhat.
Also, resumes are the key to getting the interview--post yours at monster.com, etc, etc. I dont have too much experience, and yet I receive calls about my resume from recruiters as well as HR departments, almost on a daily basis.
I bought "Interviewing For Dummies" yesterday, read it last night, and *COULD NOT BELIEVE* how mistakes I made in my previous interviews. Before, I just wanted to get it over with--"I have a degree, so I get the job, right?" But NOW, I am actually looking forward to my next interview, as I am that much more confident I will be offered the job! I'm sure "Resumes for Dummies" and "Cover Letters for Dummies" by the same author is just as helpful (I have different sources for those). I'd recommend "Interviewing for Dummies" to anyone who needs a job in this economy to get the edge that they need, even if your interview is tomorrow, get this book!
Thanks for reading my whole spiel--good luck! And no, I dont own any "For Dummies" stock, etc--just trying to help out :P
