The Thermoengine and Shims
I bought a Thermosonic thermoengine with one of those high-speed delta fans on it. Fans, heatsinks, etc. are something I know almost nothing about.
1. Do I seriously need a shim-thingamabob? If so, where can I buy one? What does it look like? Do they make different ones for different heatsinks?
2. How much thermal grease stuff do I need to put on? The company that makes Arctic Silver II claims a 3g tube is enough for 20-30 applications.

1. It's not a necessity, I have a thermoengine and placed it on and off about 20 times and didnt chip or break my CPU.
Tho it's always much safer to have one.
You can get it from www.millisec.com
Theres not different one for different heatsinks, but there are different ones for different sockets and such.
2.A VERY thin layer of AS on the top of the die.
Go to www.articsilver.com for great instructions.

Not only saftey, but a shim can give a better chance of getting the heatsink seated better on the core. People have reported lower temperatures when using a shim (not much, but a few degrees C).

I just did. The shim will increase the chance of the heatsink making better contact with the core, and staying that way.

to get the non conductive laser cut shims.
do they work, yes. don't get the copper ones, they can actually increase the temps a small amount, plus there is always the possibility the copper could short a bridge, but that is very remote.
BTW, I just got my shim, installed IT with regular thermal paste, put a small coating of Arctic Silver II on the CPU core only, reattached my MC462, and fired her up. Temps dropped even more with the shim (MC462 used before and after)in place.
My temps are amazing and that enormous heatsink is definately flat, something I worried about with the spring tension M/B mounting of this sucker from the beginning.
Good luck.

I'm also using a ThermoEngine, with a 1.4Ghz t-bird, not O/Ced (yet). Is the grease highly recommended, or can I get away with just using the sticky little pad?

The thermoengines Thermal Pad is pretty good actually, sometimes 1-2c cooler then AS, sometimes 1-2c hotter. So with the thermoengine, you can get away with it.
But with any other compound, no way

A shim is a little metal plate that goes between the heatsink and the processor.
I still don't know what to do; Some people say yes, a shim is great, AMD says no, don't even try it.
