What is a good QUIET heatsink/fan for a Thunderbird?
I have a Global Win FOP32-I perched on top of my Thunderbird 1.33 in my new rig, and geeze is that sucker LOUD! Having recentley upgraded from a P2/450 Dell machine, I guess I'm not really sure if this level of noise is supposed to be acceptable or not. Can someone recommend a fan that they know is definetley quiter than the Global Win one? I don't wish to resort to water-cooling.
TIA

Fop32 isnt loud at all....do you mean the FOP38 with eh Delta fan? Hmm...well if you think a FOP32 is loud, im guessing the only HSF qieter than that is the Noisecontrol Silverado, its very quiet, and actually perfos good......gotta shell out 80 bucks for it tho.

Soldier,
You don't think it's loud? Hmmm, maybe I do need to adjust my expectations.
BTW, I bought it at a computer show, and the dealer told me that he thought it was loud..

I have a Cooler Master DP5-6H11 cooling my TBird 880 (OC from 800) on an ABit KT7 motherboard. At room temp, it runs at 27 C idle and 40 C max and produces less sound than the fan on my power supply. There is a very good review of 24 heatsyncs at tomshardware.com which I looked at when I wanted to buy a new heatsync.
By the way, if your most important concern is a quiet computer AND you are willing to buy a Noise Control Silverado, your cost might reach US $100 with shipping. There's nothing wrong with this if you have the money to spare but you might want to find alternative cooling tricks such as better airflow inside your case which would allow you to settle for a quieter, less efficient fan. You could also lap the heatsync and apply some thermal paste to make the heat dissipation better. I decreased the voltage on my proc to 1.69v which reduced my max temp by 3 degrees...not bad for a BIOS setting.
...its up to you.
