Heatsink woes

Alright folks, I'm in a bit of a pickle, and I'm wondering what people's suggestions / input might be.

I recently ordered:
- Abit VP6
- (2) 1GHz P3 - 133Mhz bus

I started putting this together this afternoon....and while mounting the heatsink on the 2nd CPU, one of the plastic "lips" on the Socket370 socket snapped off like a twig.

These "lips" are what the Heatsink secures itself too. Only 2 sides of the socket offers these "lips", so now that one side got blown due to faulty plastic...I'm left with only one lip Well in truth...the "lip" which snapped off still has about half of itself left....but unfortunately the Heatsink clip simply can't hold onto it without popping off in a matter of seconds.

So..I've rigged up a method involving some string which secures the Heatsink onto the CPU semi-well....but I'm really not liking this situation.

At idle process, the CPU which has it's heatsink mounted properly hovers around 23'C, while the "rigged" CPU/Heatsink hover around 46'C.

I'm just not liking the situation...and I'm pretty cheesed that Abit's plastic garbage socket snapped on me.


Are there other P3-FCPGA heatsinks I could buy out there which might have a better shot at handling this precarious situation?

I'ev already contacted the company I purchased this from, and they won't accept returns since this wasn't a product 'defect' in their mind, but rather a physical issue. They said I would have to contact Abit directly....if I were to seek a replacement. Ugh...going through Abit would be a long and painful process....

I would advise you to contact Abit directly, if Abit allows this. I know ASUS deals with warrranties with their customers directly and I've gotten 1 brand new board replacement for no charge.

I've seen a mod which involves a guitar string and patience. However, you're never going to have the performance that you'd have with a proper lugs. The person who made the original socket specification really didn't cater to the need of having a heatsink on top of the CPU.

You could get something like the Zalman CNPS5000. But since you've got a P3 motherboard, it wouldn't work .

I do believe that the Alpha PEP66 installs the same way and is built for P3 motherboards. But that's just a guess.

ack! i blame those bloody hsf clips, they need such a stupid amount of pressure to secure! its just silly.

i have been using the clip from an old 120mhz time pc i got 5 years ago. it holds plently well but dosent put your core/clippy bits at risk.

grr its all just a conspiracy to get us to buy more shims! revolt!

Just an FYI, Abit charges $25 for an RMA...try arguing with the place you bought it from, I guess - talk to the supervisor, then his/her supervisor, and keep going up

If you have a clear spot in the socket area drill a hole on each side of the socket, in the mobo, and ues a tie wrap/zip tie to secure the heatsink.

Or install two machine screws in the drilled holes. Epoxy them in place and get a piece of metal, drill it to fit over the machine screws and secure it with two nuts.

Hmmm, thanks for the input guys. I'm still not sure on what my next step will be. Abit has been more or less unresponsive...so I might go back to the people I bought it from and squeek some more.

If I still can't get anywhere...I might try Cajn Dave's method Hehe, his engineering prowess shows as always.

Before you go drillin' for oil, may I suggest a much simplier method?

What kind of HSF unit's do you have now? If they are typical, they only clip to the center cleat on each side of the ZIF socket. There are HSF clips which secure to all three cleats on both sides, which bypass this little situation, since it is a fairly common occurance. Contact some of the cooling sites, and see if they would be agreeable to sending you one of those "wide" HSF clips for yours. If you do it from the site you got the HSF units from, they might send them to you for free.

OK, this is normally on a Kanie Hedgehog. But as you can see, it isn't reliant on the center cleat like a normal HSF clip.
