Fan proximity to HD
I'm in the proccess of assembling a new rig and I ran into this potential issue. I can mount my HD in front of the foward intake fan (which I want to do for cooling), but if I do that it's almost touching the fan. Should I be concerned about any possible data corruption caused by the fan's magnetic field? The fan is a Panaflo low speed fan. The drive is the Maxtor D740X-6L 40 gig 7200 RPM.
BTW I don't like this case. It looks nice but it has some issues. I'll write a review on the newegg thing in more detail.
Thanks for any help!

i dont think it will matter. i dont think a case fan can create enough of a magnetic field to corrupt the data on the hd. also hd's are well shielded from everything

My Lan Li PC70 case is setup where the hardrives sit right in front of the fans in the front, it runs good and I dont tihnk you really have to worry, unless you tihnk it might affect the circulation of the fans air to other part of the pc

Yeah, I don't think you have to worry about that. Isn't there extra screw holes in the hd mounting area so you can push it back a few inches anyways?

Nup. Like I said this case ain't that great The forward intake fan isn't even centered, it's off centered like 2 inches to the right. Still enough to cool the HD(s) though. My HD holes aren't ecentric, oherwise I'd obviously keep it farther away. The system is on now without the fan on. The Maxtor is not very warm but still, I want fresh air on it, not to mention some airflow in the case.
Thanks though - hopefully this won't futz anything up once I get that fan going. I cut it out of an old PSU so it lacks power connectors atm.

It's not a good idea to have front intakes anyways. All you need is a lot of exhaust fans and a big intake in the bottom front of your case. The exhaust fans pull the air through natural pathways in your case which is better than having a lot of turbulance (caused by intakes). 3 80mm exhausts + PSU should keep things nice and chilly.

I agree with not needing intake fans, but if you really want to put one in there, maybe you could find a lower profile (thinner)fan. Probably won't have the same cfm as a deeper one, but it should be sufficient to cool the HD.

Ah excellent reply - I didn't think of that Gotta dig these forums.
This case sucks for cooling. I'm going to have to cut a few holes in it or buy another one. The front intake area is tiny, only a 80mm grilled intake. The grills have a lot of sheet metal in them blocking air. I think I'll cut all that out in the front and put some a grill there. The rear is awful too, with just one 80mm fan. This might work because I'm not OCing atm, but again there's a lot of sheetmetal blocking flow. Did I mention this case sucks?
Thanks for the ideas. I'm going to take that Panaflo out and re-think this whole design.
And thanks Shasha, that's an excellent plan too, going with a thin fan if I stay with that. I forgot they make skinny ones.
Running at 99F/36C cpu 79F/26C chassis with covers off, so nothing is in the realm of excessive yet (till I start OCing this
