Question What speed is my ram running at?

    Hi,
Is there a good program out there that IDs my Ram?
    Speed, manufacturer?

    thanks alot!

SiSoft's Sandra will tell you the speed of your RAM, and maybe some other things. What CPU and chipset are you running? That can help you figure out the speed of your RAM at least.

I dont know about a program that does that, but (assuming you have SDRAM) your RAM runs at the same speed as your front side bus...
For example, the celeron FSB runs at 66mhz, so the RAM also runs at 66mhz.
If you have a regular PIII, then your FSB runs at 100mhz and your RAM also runs at 100mhz.
If you have a PIII EB, then your FSB runs at 133mhz, and so does your RAM.
Athlon...well, thats a different story. The Athlon FSB is 200mhz, so it just depends on what the motherboard will support, and how its configered. My Athlon board will take anything from 66mhz SDRAM all the way to 133mhz SDRAM.
Soooo...if you can find a diagnostic program that tells the speed of your front side bus, then that should tell you the speed of your RAM.

This is correct if you have a 440BX based intel motherboard, but if you have an i8xx or via based intel motherboard, your FSB and SDRAM can be run at different speeds.

    Hi, guys.
    Thanks for the inputs.

    I'm running a Athlon 750 on ABIT KA7 KX133 chipset.

Why I ask the question is because I just salvaged a stick of 64MB DIMM from a compaq P-II300.

There is nothing on the ram that tells me what speed its at, but it does look very clean.

I pulled all my ram out and had the 64mb put in and it worked, so I'm happy.

The reason I asked is because I don't know if a pc66 SDram will work with a mobo that suports 100 and 133mhz rams, and I have a doubt that the 64mb stick is actually 100mhz because its so old. If thats true all my ram will be running at 66mhz.

Anyway, thanks. And I will download Sandra and try it out. This post really shows my ignorance on RAMs.
So, my ram should be at 100mhz right?

    Yeah, 326MB of RAM!
Too bad I can't salvage the HB,CD-ROM and the Iomega zip drive.
Damn, Compaqs make those things only work on their computers.

your RAM should prolly be running at 133mhz... i think the chipset supports separate speeds for RAM and FSB... it should be running ur FSB at 100mhz while running the RAM at 133mhz -- well, those would be the optimal settings...

of course, if the RAM is set to run at 133mhz, and u got PC100 RAM in there, then all PC100 modules will be OCd to reach the 133mhz set in the BIOS. If u set the RAM speed to match the FSB, in this case, 100mhz, then all PC133 RAM would be Underclocked to run at 100mhz. Apply the same principle for all PC66 modules.
