PCI, PXI, VXI
I am doing research that involves data acquisition (that needs to be real-time), while looking for new equipment I have encountered three types of buses for my hardware.
Anyone know what major differences exist between these: PCI, PXI, VXI?
P.S. Right now the tests run on a Pentium 200, using the old ISA bus. I think I have reached the limit of what you can do from there and I want to add many more dimensions to my tests. (new computer soon)

How many channels, what kind of data (all analog, mixed, etc) and what sample rate are you looking for? Also what sample time do you need.. constant to storage, limited interval, etc.. Just curious..
You may want to give national instruments a call.. They have mucho experience with DAQ and some good interfaces / packages.

I am not sure how familiar with data acq you are, but I am using (right now) the PCI-MIO series boards from NI.
I do aerospace/aeronautic research.
I am sampling 40 Thermocouples (through an Ice reference junction), 2 Druck pressure transducers that are connected to 3 Scanivalves (which are really cool!), 5 hotwires (2 single sensor, 2 double sensor, 1 triple sensor), several Pitot-static probes, a few Kiel probes, and I hope to get a PIV (particle image velocimetry) system, a bunch more thermocouples, a dozen more hotwires going by spring. (Damn laser saftey guy is being a chunt)
At them moment I have to use RS-232 (serial) (for traverse control), IEEE 482 (i think) GPIB (for thermocouple), and the 16 channel analog input card (digital isn't that important at the moment)
The only thing I really need to be fast are the hotwire probes, and the PIV system (and a possibly future stuff)
I spent some time looking over the NI, TSI, KAYE, Druck, and various other sites and I think PCI will work.
I just know lots of people here know crazy amounts of stuff, so i thought i'd ask.
