my monitor is soooo dark....
i just got a new 19 inch monitor from my dad(he bought a 15 inch flat screen) and its kind of dark. even with the brightness and contrast up all the way. my dad had the same problem but he wasnt too bothered by it. i was just wondering if there are any cool little programs that i could use to increase the brightness or any color schemes i could download or something. there is nothing to change it with in my display properties or anything. any suggestions?

What video card are you using with that monitor? Alot of video cards have a set of "power tools" that can be installed and most of them have a gamma adjuster.

what kind of monitor is it? Don't really understand why anyone would want to go from a 19" to a 15", but oh well. Gotta be adjustments somewhere. Do you have Photoshop? If so try running Adobe Gamma, but if the monitor has no controls then your're probably a bit screwed!
So much to learn

Yep if its a GeForce series card you have, up the gamma from 1.0 to 1.3-1.5 or so.

His dad went from a 19" CRT monitor to a 15" LCD monitor. As long as you are not gaming or using the computer for video/imaging an LCD will provide severely higher quality pictures. Also the size of a CRT monitor is measured by taking the diagonal length of the CRT tube (which is smaller than the actual screen) while the size of an LCD is an exact diagonal measurement of the screen. So in fact a 15" LCD will be roughly the size of a 17" CRT. Even though you are losing 2 inches in most cases this will actually be an upgrade considering the gain in quality.
He has adjusted the controls on the monitor all the way up.
Adobe Gamma adjusts the color environments within photoshop it will not fix his problem.

Not sure if all monitors have this but on mine in the OSD (On Screen Display) settings there's an option to adjust the video level between 0.7v and 1.0v which modifies the brightness in order to account for glare.
The 1.0v setting is great at night, the 0.7v setting hurts my eyes when browsing web pages with white backgrounds -- much like this one. 0.7v is fine during the day though.
Hope this helps.
