i want to have XP for my main OS and then a tweaked no frills win98SE for my games.
how ouwld I go about his. A dual boot or 2 partitions ?

Create at least two separate partitions: one for 98, one for XP, and maybe more for apps, data, or whatever. Install Windows 98 on the first partition. After installing 98, Install XP on the second partition -- it'll automatically set up a dual boot for you.

When do I set up the raid and when do I partition. ?

As far as the OS is concerned, the array is one physical drive. You'll set up the array before installing the OS. Once the array is configured, treat it as a single drive. Use FDISK to create multiple partitions, then install 98 on the first partition and XP on the second.
