"The first cardinal rule of o/c is that nothing is guaranteed."

Yep, I bought a couple of PentiumIII E chips figuring I'd hit those glorious 155-166 FSBs. Well the 850E I bought only does 124 FSB for 1055 mhz on air cooling, not bad actually. A couple of guys in the Overclockers.com database need water cooling or Peltiers to hit this. But geez, there are a couple of guys who get 133 FSB with the same stepping.

And shoot, I could have bought a PentiumIII 1000EB and get 133 FSB guaranteed!

So be wary of 100 FSB CPUs, you could get a lemon and be real disappointed.

well, as has been said before, there's no such thing as a guarantee, but chances are good. very very good. if you're interested in a rambus setup (and i think you should be if you're going to OC a P4) then look into the Abit TH7-II or Asus P4T-E. very good overclockers. i got the abit originally, but i got a defective board, and so i got the asus only because i was able to find it locally. the abit's a bit better because the asus stops you at 133 mhz fsb. but then again, i think they do that to make sure it's stable.

    good luck.

When it comes to the 1.6A Northwood, I'm going to have to go with, "It's guaranteed", to run at or above 2GHz... Almost every single of these suckers that have been put out have gotten that high, and much higher might I add.

Besides this processor, it's all up to the motherboard, RAM, and cooling that depends on how high you can get it.

    Oh yeah, lemme tell ya!

No, it's just that I haven't seen anybody get any lower than 2GHz... And if they can't get that high, it's because of a crappy motherboard, or shitty RAM.

You really shouldn't be saying it is guaranteed. Yes, as I stated previously, there are other factors, but there is still NO GUARANTEE that all 1.6A's will hit 2GHz or more. Chances are that most will hit that mark, but never make a statement of guarantee when you talk o/c.

before you consider buying the MSI 645, i'd head over to their forums and take a look-see. It appears that a large majority of MSI645 users can't get the hardware temp monitoring to work correctly (a la the ASUS motherboards).

I also checked out the i815ET while i was there, and it's a good thing - apparently the board has troubles running the Tualatins at 100mhz FSB (mind you this board is a re-release with "TUALATIN SUPPORT" plastered all over the box). I was almost going to buy the board from newegg - looks like i'll be going with the Abit ST6 (unless the ASUS TUSL2-C fixed the vcore adjust issue with the tualatins?)
