Windows XP and Clear Type fonts?

Who uses Clear Type fonts w/Windows XP? I just set it and am trying to get used to it. I'm used to the normal smooth fonts, but everyone keeps saying Clear Type fonts are MUCH better.

Just curious!

I installed it once and then formatted cause I hated it so bad...it actually hurt my eyes to look at my screen...I formatted cause I tried to uninstall it but the font never changed and was still hurting my eyes....

Yep my eyes hurt with clear type fonts so I have them set to standard. They shouldn't hurt because my comp is on a 100hz refresh rate but they do which is pretty strange.

Cleartype fonts are meant to be used on LCD monitors to make the text easier to read. On a regular analog monitor they make my eyes hurt too because that's not what they're meant to be used on. They eat extra resources too anyway so shut them off.

I can't stand not using them now...while they originally were intended for LCD's, give them a few days before turning them off...once you get used to them, not using cleartype makes everything look so windows 3.1ish. It's just a different method of AA'ing fonts, so people are nuts if it's causing them headaches...they may prefer them, but IQ IS a matter of personal preference. Try them for yourself.

When I first installed XP, like many people, I enabled cleartype straight away. At first, I thought they looked quite good, but in the end I reverted back cos they made my computers video speed quite a bit slower, and even though standard fonts look blockier, they are actually a lot easier to read IMO.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't know they were intended for LCD monitors! I am kinda getting used to them, but was really curious if everyne bit on them.

If you look at your shortcut lettering on your desktop and switch between the two there is a noticable difference. The ClearType is much better ...

I'll most likely go back to standard, but wanted to give ClearType an honest chance since there was soooo much hype about them.

I myself got hooked on them too. It does make it hard for me to read text on any other computer tho. But with Cleartype enabled, my eyes don't start hurting as soon as before. Plus I definitely think it's much clearer than without it enabled. And if it looks better, who cares if it uses up a few more resources

ClearType fonts look oh so much smoother to me... don't notice any extra resources being used though. And even if they did, since these resources are "extra" shouldn't that be more reason to use them? Isn't that why you buy "extra" RAM? :rolleyes:

And why would you have to reformat after enabling them? It's just a checkbox option -- you can't "uninstall" it. Just enable/disable it by checking the box.

The one I installed was some download version with no uninstall....plus I was bored and wanted to partition my hd...solved a bunch of problems at once.

I'd rather not waste ram on something that hurts my eyes. Even if they didn't blind me for life I'd probably leave them off since they use more cpu power than memory.
