What am I doing wrong to get cruddy speeds via cable modem??

Can my setup on the mboard or Windows XP be effecting my speed??

I'm getting a cruddy 300-400 Kb/s for download speeds. I've tried with and without a router.

I did notice that my laptop (Windows 2000) gets a little better download speed (around 400-500) but still pretty bad.

I tried to play RtCW and the servers tell me my ping is too high (doh!) ... I have Comcast cable.

I did build a box and complete it late last week. However, the problem seemed to occur a few days after it was complete.

    Windows XP Pro
    Athalon 1800+
    Epox 8KHa+
    512 PC2100 DDR RAM
    Linksys 10/1000 bit Lan
    ATA 66 Hard Drive
Hercules Geforce 2 Pro 64 Meg DDR Video

If I missed any info you need let me know!

Download the cable tweak from site below. It works great, nearly doubled my speed from 300 to 550....

Here is a trace ... I'm guessing the 51 ms to the first hop isn't good and the Request timed out is even worse ...

    Comments???

Your first hop to 10.142.8.1 is on your own LAN.
The ping time should be show as 0 or less than 1ms.
Check the error stats for your nic.
    Open a command window.
    Enter netstat -es

Sparker: Did you call Comcast and have them check your Cable signal. They did that for me and it needed fixed. Moreover, you might have a bad Cable modem. Are you renting from them? I get up to 1500KB/s. Comcast in our area is new and they are limiting the download speed. However, you should be getting double of that speed!
