Stick with 98SE or move to XP?
I got my new system put together about 2 months ago and tried a standard update to SE. Everything started off working fine, but now I keep getting at least one lock-up/failure every 15-20 minutes. So, I'm breaking down and doing an entire format of my HDD and reinstalling Windows. Should I spend the money on getting XP or should I just stick with Win98SE? I just bought the SE update (for ~$20), but I can get the XP upgrade for ~$50. Since I don't do any networking, video editing, or DVD watching, what would I actually gain with XP?
When I reformat my HDD, I'd like to take advantage of my Mobo's RAID controller. Any comments on that?
Mucho thanks!

stability!
That's the best thing you gain with it. You can go with 2000 since 2000/ XP are very identical. And RAID won't be a problem. Just install raid drivers while installing.
Oh and don't upgrade if you want a fast, stable system. Do a clean install.

I would say go with XP if you absolutely have to or what the features and stability. But for compatibility I would still stick with Windows 98SE. If you can dual boot its the best combo when mixed with XP.

Doh...I just thought of something. Can I do a clean install with XP if I buy the upgrade version ($99) or do I have to get the big package ($180)? I couldn't find any info on Microsoft's website, so I'm turning to youz guyz again!
Then again, I can see the possibility of having to do a clean install of Win98, and then upgrading to XP. What a mess.

I'm pretty sure the upgarde disc should just ask you to place your 98 cd in the drive to verify you own it and will still install cleanly.

Yes, you can do a full install of WinXP from the upgrade CD, I just did it 2 wks ago. It will ask you to mount your Win98 CD during the install. Go WinXP if you like a rock-solid OS . . .
