Alpha 8045 Waterblock
I was going to mill my own waterblock out of solid copper, and put the old 8045 on top of the waterblock in case the pump breaks or something, but then I got thinking. If I'm already making my own waterblock, why not make it directly in to the 8045! I'll just mill out a maze on the bottom and attach a copper plate directly to the Alpha. This would give me hopefully even better cooling through the giant fins, and a backup HSF if the pump fails. I'll just hook up a sensor that turns my HSF on when the pump goes off.

you mean mill the base right?
another way to do it is to encase the whole thing in copper or aluminum, and have the fins inside the flow of water
you might want to check out www.overclockers.com/tips762/ the guy modded a sk6 to become his waterblock..

Yeah, just mill the base and put anothner pice of copper over it. I think it would work, if I could just find out how thick the copper plate inside the HSF actually is.

That should be plenty of metal to mill. The only problem to solve now is how to hook up the inlet and outlet.

yeah, you'll probably run into some capacitors if you're not careful...
maybe take out a section of the fins and have inlets and outlets from the top?

I was just about to post this idea. It seems to be the best route route. I see Zack has a 8KHA+ which has clearance for the 8045, but not much room for the inlet and outlet. THe only place you could do these with plenty of room, is looking at the board with the ram slots horizontal to you, look to the right of the socket, there will be nothing to block you there, just your PSU, and if your PSU isn't in the way that might be the best route. Good Luck

I have enough room if I use right angle fittings coming out of the block. I could also have the coming out the top through the fins and take a right angle to clear the fan.

will this be 3/8" or 1/2"

Probably 3/8" becasue I already have fitting and pipe of this size. Also, 1/2" pipe will not look very good inside the case.
