    Unhappy intranet vs. internet

ok, me and my 2 buddies have verizon's 1.5mb/386kbps DSL and we share it between our 3 comps. We have a problem tho, our IP range is 4.67.7.xxx (dynamically assigned, but we always get the same numbers)(or something close to that) we can all get online fine, but we cant see each other across the network unless we specify our IPs (to like 192.168.0.xxx) and then we can share, but we cant get online. We have resorted to sending things through AIM since we cant get our network up....but it is WAY slower. How can we make it where we can see each other over the network, AND be online. 2computers are running XP Pro, and 1 is running ME. When we play Diablo 2 I think we are playing online, splitting our bandwidth, rather than over our 100mb switched network. *sigh*

    any help would be apreciated.

Well check this link for XP.
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p...figconnect.asp
For Win98 I use ICS for internet sharing. Not sure how it works in XP.At any rate usually the first computer connecting to the Cable or dsl is the gateway.Put that address (usually 192.168.0.1,subnet mask=255.255.255.0 on all computers)in each computer for the gateway for tcp/ip > Network card.

The other computers individual address would be like 192.168.0.2 ,"".3
But the gateway is 192.168.0.1.Because that computer stands between you and the internet.
If you have a router that is the gateway.I assume you don't.
This is just an approximation = I don't have XP.I think XP has some kind of firewall you have to enable the other computers to go through.
-Netbeui protocol can be used with client for microsoft networks also.
-IPX/SPX might be needed for some games.

The way that it is setup is that we have a 8 port switch, and the DSL modem is (either in the uplink, or port number 1, im not at home rightnow) and then the other comps are in the next slots in the switch. then our IP's are dynamic, and everything just works.... I dont know where to go from here. there is no firewall computer, or gateway computer...we all use Norton 2k2 personal firewall, and norton 2k2 corp edition Virus scanner.

Have you tried typing \\4.67.7.xxx in the address bar or are you trying to go through Network Neighborhood/My Network Places? Also are those the IPs the outside world sees you as or just the internal DSL network.

I had 3 friends doing the same thing and their IPs where internal and it worked just fine, they could see the shares on every computer in the DSL network if they used \\IPaddress. They had a few friends that had DSL as well and shared files like that.
If your sig is longer than your post then type more.

I try going through network neighborhood...they are our outside IP's, our internet IP's. If I go to DSL Reports, and say, what is my IP, then it comes up as that... I dont know if we have seperate internal IP's (i dont think so) but I would like to be able to play games internally over our 100mb switch, rather than share 1.5mb/386kbps to play with each other..

the problem is that i want to be able to send stuff/play games over our 100mb switch *internally* but I still want to be able to go online, and play games *externally*

The easiest way to solve the problem is to buy an inexpensive router and use a single public IP for the Internet and private IP addresses on your LAN.

Yes............get a router. Often when people network the way you are networking they have this problem. The problem is most likely that you guys are on different subnet masks. If you are on a different subnet then you will not be able to play games and such. Roadrunner in my area has many different subnets it uses which causes the problems you are describing.

If you have a router you will all be on the same subnet and still be able to access the net.
