In response to that diagram on the first page:

I always thought that an 8.1 setup would be ideal like say

    FL C FR

ML L MR (sub to be placed wherever you want it)

    RL RC RR

    where

FL, FR= Front Left, Front right

ML, MR= Mid Left, Mid right with L being the listening spot

RL, RC, RR= Rear left, Rear Center, Rear Right

That would seem like it would be the most effective (unless you wanted to put speakers in the ceiling above and below you as well, but now we are getting ridiculous). I wonder if something like this is in the works. I also wonder why the dual rear channels in 7.1 according to that diagram are so close together.

    Any comments?

Yea, liking stereo is nice! I'm not gonna jump on the 6.1/7.1/what have you bandwagon--5.1 is plenty... now, the SACD or DVD-A bandwagon, that might be another story..

And, remember people, there are VERY SPECIFIC REASONS (that I unfortunately don't know...) for the specific locations of speakers in these setups...

Like, not every speaker is made to show you the exact sounds coming from that specific location. In a game, yes, it is, but NOT in a movie...which is what these setups are made for...

I dunno. This is too confusing, so I'm like, "screw it, I'm going 5.1 with speakers that can actually position sounds in a specific, defined space..." Forget all of this wierd ambient/no localization stuff.. I wanna hear exactly where someone is sneaking up behind me in CounterStrike...

    uhoh

Yeha I can see no reason why there is a need for this kind of Vulgar muscle flexing by George Lucas. Seems kinda ludacris that he would do this when it would totally inconvience the movie industry. There arent many theaters that i know of that use THX or THX-EX decoding, as far as I know its mostly Dolby, DTS and SDDS (gotta love Sony), every projectionist I know thinks George needs to check his ego at the door. Besides for the average person there is no difference between 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 and 8.1 if its done properly. Its all just a "look what I can do" factor.

yeah there arent many theaters that use thx-ex but its really all decoding and you can do it at home without anything special. Star Wars: Episode 1 uses THX-EX which is where it originally came from as he wanted a full 360 degree pan scan around the pod racing stuff. and you also have to remember that thx is a partner with dolby and the like meaning that a lot of theaters have both. Dolby focuses on soundtrack formats while THX develops standards for playback environment regardless of film format. but i do agree with you, he does need to check his ego at the door. THX seems more and more like a commercialized scam everyday..........

That's your fault if people are sneaking up on you in CS!
That's a matter of covering your ***, not the sound.
