that's it. need new cd-rom. any suggestions?

alright, my cd-rom is dying. it still installs MOST games but takes forever and makes a horrible clicking sound when doing so. many times i will see the hour glass icon up to 3 minutes befor installshield starts!! I can't get ANY sims/sims expansion games installed as the cd rom just locks the pc hard!!! ahh, sorry 'bout that i had to get that out of my system as my wife is tired of hearing of it. thanx.

anyway, i got my eye on a sony 52x cd rom for $32 at Best Buy. any suggestions. keep in mind that my cd-rom even when new would take literally up to 18 seconds to even spin up once in the drive!! I am looking for one that once the cd is in the drive it gets going!!!

    thanks in advance all!!!!

ps. any of you use the yamaha 72x cd rom that splits the laser up for ultimate speeds? i've been looking at that for the high end. thanks

    get a DVD ROM drive

not only will it replace your CD drive but you will be able to by software on DVDs (and obviously, watch DVDs on your rig)

those games with 5 CDs that your have to juggle CDs will no longer be a problem if you can find the DVD version

    good idea

thought about that, but i gave up those adventure games a while back. might just do that though if it seems games are going in that direction.

Personally I think DVD media is the next big thing (just like the transition from floppies to CDs)

    I don't have a DVD drive yet because I don't have the $$$

In this months issue of MaximumPC they don't like that Yamaha 72x. And I'd just walk on down to Best Buy and get that Sony for just 2 more dollars difference!

Edit: helps to spell things right . . .

guarenteed...regular cds will end up like casset tapes soon. software, games, and everything else will be moved to dvd. might as well save yourself the money now and just upgrade to a dvd drive. that way if the revolution starts tomorrow, you'll be prepared

Im using the Sony 52x CDROM from Newegg now. Works fine, about as much as you can ask from a CDROM. Bought mine for about the same $30 price tag its going for now. Maybe that helps, i know im happy with it.

Why on earth are people suggesting CD-ROMs........definately get a DVD-ROM. They cost little more and can play DVDs.

To be honest, the speeds are irrelevant nowadays cos most have the same SUSTAINED speeds, and bursts speeds are a minor difference. The only thinmg you should look at that I can think of is the level noise it makes.

Good choice, I always build with that Sony Drive.DVD????I have four DVD players in my house and have no need for one in my rig. I think my couches are much more comfortable for viewing my movies on larger screens. If and when they start to utilize DVD players more for software, I'll get one then. That way I won't have to worry about backwards compatibility issues. Great for the guys in a college dorm though.
