How is AMD going to compete with the NW-b?
I have both AMD systems and Intel. I am kind of scared that AMD does not have a game plan to really attack the NW-b or anything after that. I know that AMD is coming out with their Hammer Core, but is that made for the 64bit architecture?
The current CPU core of the XP/T-bred is very limited. I cannot see the T-bred exceeding 2.5Ghz with out any type of exotic cooling. Where I can see the NW-b hitting an easy 4GHz (ONLY LIMITED BY INTEL).
I am not looking for any flame wars! I am just worried that AMD will have a hard time keeping up with the Intel advancements. If they cannot that is VERY BAD NEWS for all of us.
Maybe The Hammer core will help out but I don't know enough about it to say.

Hmm, I don't think AMD cares about the performance crown in Q2. With Barton, AMD will get back and approach Northwood-B and the Clawhamemr should be released that will probably outmatch the Northwood-B until the Prescott and then Intel may take the performance lead again or it will be neck and neck.

That's a good way to look at it. I mean one will always be ahead of the other. AMD had lead the cpu race for quite some time; Intel needed a turn. Tbred looks to be a potentially wicked OCer. Barton and its extra L2 cache however cannot get here soon enough

We have all seen the gains that the Athlon gets from increased FSB speeds. Even if they can't scale the MHz much higher with T-Bred, they would still be well advised to offer a version with 166MHz FSB to match the memory bandwidth offered by the KT333 chipset. As it stands now, the KT333 offers little or no real world performance gains with only PC2700 RAM, but not matching FSB bandwidth.

I’ve been saying for some time that AMD would be hurting this summer. Barton should get some help from higher FSB speeds, but the larger cache will not have the same effect it had on NW. The percentage FSB increase is also smaller for Barton then it will be for NW.
Two other factors in Intel’s favor are the dual channel DDR chipsets due out later this year and constantly improving software optimization. I expect these to offset the gains AMD gets from extra cache and faster FSB, leaving Intel with its FSB increase in June and better scaling core to pull away.
The P4 is going to gradually pull away from the Athlon until it is completely replaced by Hammer. It not surprise me to see the P4 open up a 20% - 25% performance lead over the Athlon core by the end of the year. There is not going to be any relief for AMD until hammer starts shipping, that is why it is essential for AMD to get hammer out the door this year. If it slips any further AMD is in a lot of trouble. Fortunately it looks like they will be able to deliver hammer on schedule. (At least on the most recent schedule. There were some early roadmaps that had it out in 2001.)

Well amd is out of luck then. The hammer is supposed to ship to manufacturers by the end of this year, and be available in the consumer market next year. Making for a very short performance crown if any.

And yet if Tbred comes with an unlocked or easy to unlock multiplier, pair that with a KT333 or KT400 and you're riding a 200/400Mhz FSB and then some
