You may want to avoid factory OC'd cards.

Apparently there are have been some problems with lockups on the factory OC'd G71 GPU based cards. nVidia has said that the chips the AICs used simply didn't have the headroom for the clock rates at which they sold the card. Very interesting indeed.

    Well, I don't have that problem as I don't own 7900GTXs...
But that's too bad... I sure hope those who buy factory OC'ed cards bought either eVGA or BFG!

Unforgiven, isn't the 7600GT based on that chip? I just got a "stock" eVGA 7600GT and I checked, via coolbits2, the core and memory clock rates. Core=580; memory 750. The "superclocked card is 620 and 780

At least, the memory speed should be ok since it's just the cores that are affected...

Not necessarily, because the memory controller could be the problem, not the RAM modules.

As a side note, in case you may have missed it, the article only seemed to refer to the 7900GTX series cards, which are already at the top end of the spectrum in terms of transistor count and clock speed settings. I don't know that the lower model cards were seeing this problem.

why you'd oc a top end card that doresn't need oc'ing to run any game at fullout graphics is beyond me... *** is the point?

Aside from the fact that they are indeed top of the heap, a quick correction: They are actually lower in transistor count and power consumption than their predecessors. I think it is this that is giving the card manufacturers the false sense of security when they decide to ramp up clock speeds. "It's supposed to run cooler, so let's OC it and charge extra!"...

    Not necessarily a bright idea.

dual 7900GTX in SLI can barely chug along at 50fps in Oblivion with HDR enabled and max settings

then theres theres the benchmark junkies

Don't forget the guys with 30" Dell LCD's...

Those things are like a black hole for graphics power at the native resolution.
