    Cool Pure Gaming Machine

    Hello,
I need some assistance. I am redoing my main PC from Windows 98se to ???. I mostly use my PC for gaming and Office 2000, email, web browing. I would like some advice as to what OS should I move too. I had Windows XP Pro installed once but I am not sure if I like it yet. I was thinking Windows 2000 Pro SP2. My specs are as follows.

    Intel Pentium 4 2.26Ghz (533Mhz FSB) @ 2.6Ghz
    (2) Corsair DDR2700 2-2-5 512MB Chips
    Abit BD7II-R Mainboard
    SoundBlaster Audigy
    Built-in Realtek NIC
    Leadtek Geforce4 4600 w/128MB DDR
    (4) IBM 60GXP 80GB HardDrives
    Adaptec 29160 Ultra160 SCSI Controller
    Toshiba 16x DVD
    Antec Mid-Tower SX840 w/400W PS
    Yamaha CRW-F1ZS 44x SCSI CDRW
    Sony Multiscan G420S
    ---------
I play most new games, Warcraft III, SOF2, Series Sam 2, RTCW, etc. But I do like the occasional old game like Baldur's gate, half-lifeor even Rise of The Triad or Tex Murphy.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I also hate the fact that if I run Windows98se I have not found the driver for the USB2.0 Controller on my mobo.

Since you're on a intel platform, I suggest you stick with win xp. If you were on an amd platform, I strongly suggest that you use win2k with sp2 .

    Just do a dual boot.
Make partitions (at least two) on the harddrive
    Then install Win98 on C:

then in win98 install winXP or win2000 on the other partition.
The only down side is win98 can't see the XP partition or any NTFS partition, but winXP can see all the partitions, FAT32(win98) and NTFS(winXp) file systems.

    That simple
You will never have to worry about games not running

XP sucks rocks. Windows 2K is more mature and stable than XP. I have only come across one of my games that won't run on 2K, and that was one of the NFS games. Everything else runs like a champ.

XP is majorly bloated and has a bit too much spyware in it for my liking.

i also think xp is bloatware.... i really like win98 the best but its networking capabilities suck and lack of rom-dump is the nail in the coffin

Finally! Someone who isn't affraid to say it. XP is no where near as good as 2k. How many 2k problems do you think there compared to XP? There are probably a lot more due to the fact that 2k has been out longer than XP has. SO....can you say...got win2k?

*Jumps on the XP sucks wagon*

I bought and installed XP Pro, within a 2 week period I had to reinstall no less than 5 times and had they system crashing on average 6 times a session!!! And all this on a new system where everything was certified XP compatible. Now I'm stuck with an expensive paperweight because they won't let you return XP once you have bought it and got the license

Oh well, I'll stick with ME

Wow... alot of XP haters .. jk.

I personally like them both equally. I personally think Windows 2000PRO is a faster OS (over time). Xp tends to act all gayish and begin to slow down. However, I do like XP's compatibility with hardware. Although 2000PRO liked my Wireless network better than XP did. They are both awesome OS's IMO. I would say this, if you haev a P4, go XP... if you have AMD, go with 2k .

Please downgrade to 98se instead of using ME. WinME is quite possibly the worst OS microsoft has ever put out
