Skins, etc. are client side. Gameplay mods are server side. As for the update thing, yeah, most servers will probably take a few days to be updated to 1.3.x. I know DS is currently out of date as we speak, because I'm still at work. :)

Are you near New Haven? :D
[I dunno about on anyone else's screen, but with this new forum theme links seem to be nearly the same color as regular text (and no underline). There is a link in the above sentence.]
Good teaching moment. :)
My son is wanting to get into this. He's been watching videos of it on YouTube for the last several days. I guess I'm going to let him get it. Maybe he can put his imagination to work a bit.
Is it pretty easy to get on a server? Is there one that's recommended for younger folks?
*Edit:
Adventure server is still running 1.2.5. I reverted it due to weirdness with the 1.3.1 update and "old maps". We'll see how long it takes to fix this. The glitch happens when leaving a portal. You simply fall through the world until you die, or you suffocate in a wall.
In the meantime, I have started a 1.3.1 test server on the normal port. That's darksavior.net:25565
I don't know..he's just been playing on some server with two of his schoolmates. It is very creative and I would recommend it. He's already come up with some neat creations and listening to him talk about the process of creating this to have more of this so he can make more of that to build this and that is pretty cool.
Local is a good place to start playing around. If you want to go to a public server, do some reconnaissance first, make sure it's safe for the kids, then add it to the server list in their client. I would totally recommend our Sharky's server, except our map is glitching with the new update. Once it's fixed, you are more than welcome to have them join the server. :) (Let me know their usernames, we run a whitelist to keep out the griefers).
old map is gone? James
It'll be back once the bug is fixed where you die every time you go through a portal, and sometimes when you respawn as well.
i'll send you a pm. I'll have to have a talk with him about griefing though...otherwise he might just go Godzilla and destroy everything LOL.
Yeah, we tried the new server version but found that bug.
To be clear: The old map is running on the normal darksavior.net:25567, same as it has always been, it's just sitting on server version 1.2.5
We have a test 1.3.1 server running now on darksavior.net:25565 to play with while we wait. Don't get attached to it, it doesn't get backed up, and we aren't keeping it. Once 1.3.2 or whatever drops that fixes this bug we'll update the main server and be back in business.
So tl;dr version: To play adventure you have to stay on 1.2.5. If you want to mess with 1.3.1, we have a test server for that.
Both the test server and the "Adventure" server are running 1.3.1. Tuns out the portal bug affects the map either way, so might as well play, just play at your own risk. Old school server started with the 1.3.1 server version.
*Edit: Linoleum and I have started work on an automated cane farm. Should be pretty cool once it's done. It is currently 4 tiers high. I need to clean up the wiring a bit, but it does work currently using a switch.

Question for James:
http://www.sharkyforums.com/
In the end, I decided it was probably me, from back before the villagers even made trades. There was a time when the overall population was down to about 2-3 so I was trying to protect them as best I could. If it gets below 2, the village can't recover.
More importantly, version 1.3.2 was pre-released (I don't really understand their release schedules) which is supposed to fix the nether portal bug. :D:D:D
Updated the server to 1.3.2. I have stopped the test server at this point, since nobody has logged into it since the 8th. So only the adventure server is running now.
Not sure if you need both the client and the server in order to survive portal travel, but at least the server piece is in place now, and is fully compatible with the 1.3.1 client.

Hey guys, question for all of you.
Since there have been so many updates since the main world was created, what are your thoughts on possibly starting a fresh map? I know we've all done a lot of work, but it might be fun to start fresh. Just wanted to poll opinion.
Personally, I don't mind either way. It would be fun to start from scratch, but I've done so much work on the castle, its grounds, and my house... would be a shame to lose that.
What do you think?
I think there is, but that would really just be importing our old problems (pre-current-version-generated-map) into the new map, and (I think) would end up being pretty much the same as just moving farther out in the existing map (both ways give you new generated map attached to the existing stuff). On the other hand, unless there's some work that's been done that I don't know about, with one exception of the portal that connects to the nether fortress out around -5000, 5000, I think we could probably do away with deleting everything out past around x=-3200 in the existing map so that we could regenerate all of that area (which is mostly water right now anyway).
