I will keep the crab picture as long as I have to (had it for 8 years now), but it would be cool to upload something a little more personal.
So, what is the number of posts that one must have to obtain this privelege? Or is that even how it works?

It use to be 5,000, but i think it is 2,500 now. It would be nice if they allowed for how long a person has been a member.
Or we could possibly run another content to allow some winners to use custom avatars or something along those lines. We're always open for good ideas to reward the members.
I'd heard it was 1,500. Guess I have a little longer to go than I thought ;)
At my current posting rate, it will take fifteen years for me to earn a custom avatar under the existing policy. I'll probably be dead before then.

Maybe an award to allow current members with an avatar to have a gif as well?
I did want to use the following as a avatar, but gifs arent allowed and only grandfathered in :( :(

Anyway I agree that sharky could be more liberal and maybe increase traffic/regular membership with features like avatars.
Im glad we dont have massive long tacky sigs or google ads, but surely sharky could relax more? Also maybe the mods could really help to promote current features like friends and groups?
Your not that old are you?
Hehe: well, any of us could be dead in fifteen years: in 15 minutes, even. You never know.
But I will be well into middle age in fifteen years, and my family is not known for it's longevity. I don't think any of the men in my family have ever lived to retire.

I guess all that death stuff distracted me from my point: fifteen years is a long time to earn a custom avatar, even if I'm chipper and healthy when the time comes. I therefore cast a vote to consider other avenues to achieve this great honor.
If not, you might have to listen to my rendition of "2500 Bottles of Beer On The Wall"
One verse at a time, of course :-)

Why not have a drawing, put the name of the member in for each year they have been a member, or one time if they have been here a year or less. Also this is for active members only. Then each month draw a name and award them with a avatar.
Contribute more. ;)
But seriously, I think that some sort of monthly contribution contest would be beneficial.
Perhaps a contest for an original hardware review would be fun and informative.
Those review forums that members clamored for are still sitting vacant.
It works out to roughly 7 posts a day for a year to earn a custom avatar. That's reasonable, I guess. And should help to stimulate conversation, at least among us newbs.
t-man (one step closer!)
lol posts dont count in here tman =)
Yes, mine was entered manually. I have something of a life. :)
Did you know that if you divide the number of atoms that make up a human verses the number of atoms that are estimated to make up the universe, we constitute 1/1,400,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,00 0,000,000 of the total universe.
Hmm, am I at 2,500 yet? *edit* blast, still 200 away. That's going to take a long time for me. Maybe loyal folks (like the OP, and like me, who've been coming since 2002) should be rewarded to some degree also. In fact, it makes more sense to reward long time visitors rather than high post counts.
Also who the hell is ua549 and how does he have 20k posts :p
UA is a moderator here, and he has 20k posts because he is retired and enjoys Sharky. I think a few others are up there, Colossus and Un4 come to mind.
Length of time is okay and all, but I was under the impression that the avatars were a nod towards contribution and not just membership length.
I average ~6 counted posts per day.
Way to make somebody feel small :(
I just finally got to 2500 after 8 years. Wow. Does somebody have to flip the switch or is 2500 not the magic number for custom av's?
it should be
