I'm not sure if you've played it so I'll just clear things up. I'm up to level 30 now so I've put a decent chunk of time into the multi-player.
I've gotten my connection dropped during a game 1 time total...it happens in the lobby sometimes but I think that's just because everyone leaves sometimes or something. And that was a timeout so I don't know if there's a separate dropping you've heard about.
Right on the first menu you have the option to Invite Friends. You click it, it brings up your steam friends, you click their name(s) and they're invited...then you can join whatever game you want together. Me and my buddy have been playin together and it makes your friend's nametag blue and their Icon blue in on the map so it's easy to follow eachother around. It's pretty awesome. Reminded me of being in a party in WoW.
Also, I've experienced the finding new host thing for the first time like a couple hours ago...and it went real fast. It happened one other time since then too...it's really not annoying like I thought it would be.
Oh and my game was periodically crashing between games when I manually set all the texture options to Extra...when i put it on Automatic, I haven't crashed since (and that was all the way back in my first few games). Just a tip for anyone else that gets that issue.
This game is awesome...any of the negative concerns I had really don't matter at all because it's all transparent when you're playing.

Enjoy your 100+ pings. I've played online FPS games for too long to even want to think about playing with such a ping. You may not notice the difference but I know I certainly will.

Where did this 100+ ping minimum rumor even start from?
When you click the find a game button, you specifically see on your screen:
Finding a game with <50ms ping...
(which you have to be fast to catch because it usually joins you into a game a fraction of a second later.)
Trust me, I've been playing competitive FPS games online hardcore since Quake 2 CTF over 10 years ago and from a dial-up to fiber optics, I know what >100ms ping feels like and I'm definitely getting low pings almost all of the time.
If you want to avoid this game because you don't like it, that's fine...but if you're worried about the features they downgraded from the last versions, you won't notice they're gone once you're getting killstreaks and raining death upon your enemies.

This hysteria from people who have not even played the game is a bit rediculous, there are at least three people here (thundergod, pointless, and myself) who actually have the game and have played it online and say that overall the system works well. The issues that you listed Taggart I have had little off, honestly I have had more issues getting into games of Left for Dead than I have had with this. While I like the dedicated server system better, overall this is pretty decent system they have now and at least the rank system has some meaning now.

I don't think its hysteria to simply point out that people who are upset over and/or having problems with the PC issues take a look at the console version.
I think its fantastic those with the PC version enjoy it, however other people on this forum and others have reported issues. I think its only fair to point out that they can still try it out on the consoles if they want.
It's not really hysteria pointing out the obvious.

I am not talking directly to you more at the hundreds of people over at kotaku saying they will never try it blah blah blah. I have not experienced a single problem with connecting to games with cod mw 2 that did not also experience in the console version of COD4. Now everyone gets to share in the fun.

The 100 ping stemmed from Mackey's response in the Best Buy chat.
What kinds of pings did you get during your IWNet testing and what do you say is an acceptable ping?
Mackey-IW: I've been playing mainly with around 100ms ping and it was great.
Also this link from the IW Forums is supposed to help you tweak the cell phone bars so you can see your true ping. Some people have reported getting better connections afterwords also.
