I always found the Master of Orion games to quench my sci-fi grand strategy cravings the best. They didn't quite have the depth of the Civ games, but they were a total blast.

Now, the Galactic Civilizations games are the obvious successor and easily one of the best grand strategy games on the market, certainly if space/sci-fi is your thing.
