Honestly, why not just treat MP as a DLC add on to games that feature a heavy SP campaign. Its basically the same thing, but removes the whole code portion and can take advantage of the already established DLC delivery platform.
I actually think in the future A`la carte modes will be a reality. Maybe not with the big AAA games but in smaller games I can see it and then with a trial of the other modes to entice you into purchasing it.
