    Assuming that you are running Win7, I would uninstall Avast and any other 3rd party security app.

    Download this free suit from Microsoft install make and configure. make also a security Boot cd and run it.

    Security essential is a free Security suit from Microsoft its free updates it self through the OS AutoUpdate and as Good as any of the 3rd party apps.

    Its works better with Windows and does Not contribute to the General software "Crap" as some of the 3rd party apps do.
