I believe there is an even better way. Text! Just post a sign and write what the tunnel is going to, or what cardinal direction. Albeit, it is slower to read, but could contain more information then a simple color coordination.

This is pretty awesome. I have no idea how you launch arrows though.

Torches give only one color and they're very easy to knock down.
Signs are more helpful overall, but who wants to put up a sign every 10 blocks down a 1000 block tunnel? :p
I do think that tunnels should at least have a sign at every entrance/exit/fork saying generally where they go.

Motion to start a PvP guns server.
I think we'll have to find another server for that. Mine is barely handling things as is.
Either that, or I need to upgrade it to SSD's and a better CPU. :p
*Edit: Update: google api map will be down for a bit. Trying to upgrade to the latest code base so we can get beta textures in the maps. (The pyramid of invisibility finally got to me.)
*Edit 2: Had to completely flush the cachedir and start from scratch. Updates of the map are disabled, and the server will be sluggish for several hours at least until the intial build of the map data is complete. To give you an idea, it's nearly 4GB (3.7GB) of images it has to composite at this point in our game map. It takes a long time on a 1.6GHz dual core Opteron. Once the initial build is complete, updates only take a few minutes. Once the initial map build is complete, I will enable updates to progress normally. I really wish I could afford to upgrade the server. :p
*Edit 3: Wow I'm dumb. Forgot to copy over the latest minecraft.jar terrain.png file, without that even the updated code base can't render the new types of blocks. I'll take care of that once I get to work (easier from there) and I'll kick off the map render again.
Just thought I would update on the google maps API.
Latest code base is installed, and I completely regenerated the map. That being said, it looks like sandstone is still borked somehow. Shows up either transparent, or bright fuchsia purple-pink.
2,320 units in the X direction.
829 blocks in the Z direction.
12 minutes and 20 seconds to make the whole trip.
The tunnel connecting all my bases from Monroeski Mine to OGWAI is now complete.
I've been filling in that hole in the bottom part of the map, and there are a few areas down there with a TON of sand, if anybody's still looking for some.
My normal Minecraft time has been taken up lately by a replay of Symphony of the Night. Once I get my duplicator I'll probably jump back in more frequently.
I have at least two ideas for projects that I'd like to work on.
I'll be honest. Recently I played through Brutal Legend, and now I'm absorbed in Puzzle Quest. I login once every few days to make sure the server is still running, etc. But I never stick around for more than 5-10 minutes. No time it would seem.
Beds and spawn point resetting to come soon:

About f-ing time!
Beds sound awesome. Yes please!
Finally, an actual reason for all those furnished houses we keep building all over the place.
Supposedly a "food meter" is coming, too.
So maybe all of my tunnels will be rendered obsolete by beds, but at least my wheat farm might become more useful. :p
Minecraft Beta 1.3
* Implemented a new lighting engine with the help of MrMessiahs (can be turned off)
* Changed the options around, added a new “Graphics options” button
* Added beds. If all players in a map sleeps in a bed during night, the game immediately skips until morning
* Added three new half-size blocks
* Added Delay/Repeater redstone dust blocks
* Added whitelisting to the server. To use, enter “whitelist <cmd>” where cmd is “on”, “off”, “add <player>”, “remove <player>”, “list” or “reload”
* New save file format, old maps need to be converted (that might take a while..)
* It’s now possible to have more than five save slots, and to rename saves
* Scrollbars in both the texture pack list, and in the map selection screen
* Replaced the Mojang splash image to reflect the new logo colors
* .. and a bunch of bug fixes and tweaks!
